    Farmers customer satisfaction and complaints

Although Farmer’s has a large network of independent agents available, the Farmers insurance rating ranks below average across all regions in the 2019 J.D. Power customer satisfaction study and earned an 865 out of 1,000 overall in claims satisfaction compared to providers of a similar size.

Although the Farmers auto insurance reviews are less than stellar, the sheer size of Farmers Insurance could negatively affect the feedback. Oftentimes, small to mid-size insurance companies rank higher. Larger claim volumes from a bigger number of policyholders can slow down claims processing and increase customer service errors.

Additionally, J.D. Power noted that insurance companies who directly sell to the public tend to rank higher. Farmers ratings may be affected because the company sells insurance through its network of agents, which could lead to lower satisfaction with the company when it’s time to resolve a complaint.

How factors affect Farmers’s auto insurance rates

According to premium data provided by Quadrant Information Services, the average premium for a Farmers minimum liability insurance policy is $587 a year. Full coverage, which is typically required when leasing or financing a vehicle, averaged $1,540 per year for Farmers. Many factors can affect the cost of car insurance, particularly your driving record. Take a look at how Farmers car insurance rates can change, according to a driver’s situation, in the table below.

How driving record affects Farmers car insurance rates

Insurance companies are in the business of minimizing risks by insuring safer drivers. If you were at fault in a car accident, you can expect to see your car insurance premiums increase. One single accident while insured with Farmers can raise your car insurance roughly 40%.

Fortunately, Farmers policyholders may be eligible for accident forgiveness coverage. The insurer won’t raise your rates after an accident, as long as you haven’t been involved in any others in the last three years.

    Speeding ticket

Speeding is considered reckless driving and can be a dangerous activity. The National Safety Council found that speeding was one of the factors in 26% of all traffic deaths in 2018, responsible for 9,378 fatalities that year.

A single speeding ticket can raise your car insurance rates with Farmers nearly as much as an accident. One ticket increased premiums an average of nearly $500. The elevated rates could remain for as long as three years — the average amount of time insurance companies factor these incidents into your rate.

    Poor credit

We found that Farmers policyholders with a lower credit score pay almost $1,000 more for car insurance on average. Car insurance companies in most states will factor in your credit score to determine your insurance rates, as it is one indicator of how risky you are to insure.

Massachusetts, Hawaii and California have made it illegal to use credit score as part of the underwriting process, but if you’re a resident elsewhere and have poor credit, your insurance rates may be higher. If you’re struggling with credit, you may want to improve your score if considering Farmers as a new provider.

    Farmers auto insurance discounts

Saving money on the cost of your car insurance is a smart financial move. Farmers insurance discounts may vary by state but there are a couple of unique discounts available worth noting. Besides the standard fare of discounts for multiple vehicles and good students, here are the signature Farmers discounts.

    Signal® by Farmers

Farmers has developed the Signal app to track your driving habits. Download the app to earn a 5% discount and get up to an additional 15% in savings at renewal, based on your safe driving history.

    Alternative fuel

If you own an electric car or hybrid, you may qualify for an automatic discount of 5% on your vehicle insurance with Farmers.

    Occupational discounts

Farmers may provide discounts to policyholders in certain vocations, including emergency workers such as police and firefighters, as well as doctors, nurses, dentists and teachers.

    Farmers auto insurance premium length

According to Farmers, the insurer offers annual premiums to “keep your rates stable.” Some insurance companies provide the option of six month or annual commitments. Shorter policies may seem like a good idea, but your premium is only locked in for a shorter amount of time, which means your rates could change as soon as your policy ends.
