Kemper customer satisfaction & complaints
While claims satisfaction information isn’t available for Kemper Corporation through J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Auto Insurance Claims Satisfaction Survey, the 2020 U.S. Auto Insurance Satisfaction Survey gave the provider a 784/1,000 score for the California region. Kemper’s customer service ratings are lower than the region’s average of 821.
The customer complaint index scores kept by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) are higher than average as well. A score of 1.00 represents the baseline industry average number of complaints. Kemper received a score of 1.95, meaning that it has higher than average customer complaints.
Kemper auto insurance discounts
By bundling more than one policy with Kemper, you may be able to take advantage of additional savings. Customers who purchase an auto policy along with a homeowners, condo owners or renters insurance policy with Kemper may qualify for this discount.
Kemper rewards its customers for spreading the word about their coverage options. In fact, if you refer a friend or family member to Kemper, you’ll receive a 10% discount on your policy if they purchase a policy of their own. Once the referral is successful and your friend finalizes their policy, they’ll also receive a 10% discount. Customers can sign up for the discount when they sign up for their policy; however, if they fail to complete the referral within 30 days, they will not receive the discount.
Like many auto insurance providers, Kemper offers a discount for taking advantage of paperless policy management options. When you sign up for your auto insurance policy and you choose paperless billing, e-signature documents and autopay, you’ll increase your monthly savings through the Free-A-Tree program.
Happily Married discount
Not only does Kemper provide a discount for legally married couples, but they also offer the Happily Married discount for couples in a civil union or domestic partnership. All you need to do is provide proof of marriage, civil union or domestic partnership to qualify and save.
Preferred Payer discount
Through the Preferred Payer discount, customers can set their own discount by paying as much as they feel comfortable with above the recommended initial payment. For the maximum discount, customers can pay for their entire policy in full.
Retro Loyalty discount
Not only does Kemper reward you for loyalty with its company, but it will also reward you for your loyalty to your previous provider. Kemper calculates the Retro Loyalty discount based on how many years you spent with your previous insurance provider and whether or not you met the basic coverage requirements in your state.
Safe & Sound discount
Policyholders with at least two named insureds and at least one driver aged 18 or older may be eligible for the Safe & Sound discount. This only applies if all drivers on the policy have not had any chargeable accidents or traffic violations in the past three years and have been continuously insured for at least one year.
In addition to the specialty discounts listed above, Kemper also provides discounts for vehicle safety features, seniors and multiple cars on your policy. Airbags, anti-theft systems and passive restraint equipment are all vehicle safety features that qualify for a discount. Drivers aged 55 or older who have completed a state-approved accident prevention course are eligible for the Mature Driver discount.
Kemper auto insurance premium length
While policies are written on an annual basis, Kemper offers customers quite a few payment options to help satisfy budgetary constraints. Policyholders may choose from annual, semi-annual, quarterly or monthly payment options. If a customer chooses to pay monthly, they will begin by making a small down payment followed by 10 monthly payments. When it comes time to renew the policy, customers will then move to one payment per month for the next 12-month term.
Customers can even pick their down payment amount using the Pick Your Payment feature offered by Kemper. And, with the Preferred Payer discount, they can even help determine their monthly payment by making a bigger down payment than the recommended amount.
Kemper vs. other insurance companies
Kemper offers a broad range of auto insurance solutions, especially for customers seeking unique coverage options and a variety of discounts. Based on regions of availability, discounts offered, claims satisfaction, overall customer satisfaction and financial strength, we compared Kemper to other major providers.
Kemper vs. Dairyland
Dairyland, a Wisconsin-based insurance provider, holds no rating with J.D. Power despite widespread coverage and has a smaller market share than does Kemper, at just 0.06%. Like Kemper, Dairyland also offers insurance solutions to drivers in need of SR-22 coverage following a DUI. However, because Dairyland specializes in insuring high-risk drivers, the rates can be higher and the available discounts may be harder to come by.
Kemper vs. National General
National General is a close competitor for Kemper, featuring the same financial strength rating of A- from AM Best and a market share of 1.24%. According to the NAIC, National General, like Kemper, receives higher than average customer complaints.
Kemper mobile app & digital experience
Kemper policyholders can manage their auto policies from their mobile devices. By downloading the Kemper app, customers can make payments, find their ID cards, locate nearby repair shops and even submit claims information. In addition to the mobile app, Kemper offers the following digital tools to help customers make an informed decision about their auto insurance policies:
- DriverClub: By joining this program online, policyholders will gain access to 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance.

In the spotlight
- Kemper policyholders can make use of payment flexibility, multiple discounts and a variety of coverage options.
- Kemper receives lower-than-average customer service scores.
- Drivers in need of SR-22 coverage following a DUI may find the solutions they need at Kemper.
Kemper auto insurance provides a solution for drivers of all risk profiles. Even drivers who have had a DUI and require SR-22 coverage can obtain policies through Kemper. While the company offers a broad range of coverage options and available discounts, the provider does not feature a high rate of customer satisfaction. Compared to other similar providers in the industry, Kemper could be your best bet for coverage, especially if savings and coverage options are important to you.
